Top Family Travel Blogs to Follow for 2014

There are so many ways to travel and explore the world around you. But the road trip is one of my favorite ways to explore the U.S. The U.S. has developed roads to pretty much any sight and adventure you would want to see.  And the ability to navigate via smartphones makes planning a trip like this easy and fun.

If you are wanting to plan a road trip of your own but feel anxious about everything involved than continue reading to find out just how easy it can be.

As an 18-year old, I joined my girlfriend and her family on a road trip from Los Angeles to Colorado. We had been planning a white-water rafting trip down the Green River in Colorado for months. We considered flying or even taking a train but neither of those options granted us the freedom we wanted for the trip.

Driving allowed us a few extra days in Colorado to visit my girlfriend's family who she doesn’t get to see often. So, we concluded that a road trip would give us the most flexibility.

We started our trip from Bakersfield, California where my girlfriend and I drove down to meet her family in LA. Upon arriving there we packed up the minivan as light as possible and we were off the next morning. We left as early as possible to insure we made it to our destination 12 hours away.

Leaving early gave us the freedom to take our time and stop along the way for gas and rest stops. I have no doubt that this is the best way to go because as you'll discover there’s always going to be reasons to stop. Especially with a bigger group like we had.

Our first stop was a totally Greek themed restaurant in the desert that lies between LA and Las Vegas. Certainly an odd thing to find out in the middle of nowhere, but makes a great place to stop and enjoy some delicious gyros. Don't disregard the smaller road side attractions or eateries. I've found that they are often times some of the highlights of any trip!

TIP: Stopping at small-town attractions can help a lot to break up the trip and stretch your legs.

After resting for a bit it was on to Vernal, the town where we joined our rafting group. On our way into town we stopped by the Dinosaur National Monument on the border between Utah and Colorado. We went on a short hike up on a ridge overlooking the canyon we would soon be drifting down. The panoramic view of the winding river was stunning.

We stayed that night in an affordable hotel in town preparing for the beginning of our four-day trip down the Green River.

We got a quick introduction to rafting by our guides and then we were off on the river. Our days were spent floating through beautiful canyons, exhilarating rapids, day hikes into the valley, camping under the stars, spotting petroglyphs, and devouring gourmet camping food. As well as enjoying the excellent company of course!

The bigger rafts were fun and exciting, but my favorite were the "duckies" as the guides called them. The rapids we were hitting weren't the craziest out there for sure. So, these smaller  inflatable kayaks made things more interesting for someone like me looking for a little more adventure. Although the the bigger rafts get knocked plenty, there isn't as much risk of falling in.

It was an unbelievable experience that I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a good adventure but doesn't want anything too dangerous.

For anyone trying to plan a road trip, it can be as easy as getting in your car and going. We were fortunate enough to have a perfect size car to fit everyone and plenty of licensed drivers to take turns. But if you're visiting, you can easily rent a car in the USA to drive to countless destinations.

Staying in budget hotels, camping, and picnicking helped us save money on our road trip vacation.

I hope this helped inspire to get in your car and see where the road takes you!

Sometimes, we all just need to get away, whether from work, home, or just in general. It’s not always about fancy hotels, exquisite places to eat or expensive things to buy, it can be all about family time without interruptions. One way I enjoy getting away with the family is to go camping. It doesn’t sound like it would be that fantastic, but once you get out there in the open, away from technology, you may feel so much better like I always do.

Yosemite National Park-California
I’m sure this is a name that you are familiar with, whether you’ve read about it or heard about it on television. This park has been protected since 1864 and is best known for its beautiful waterfalls. In this 1,200 square mile park, you can enjoy meadows, sequoias, the wilderness areas, and deep valleys. If you are up to a challenge you can even hike up the cables of Half Dome for a one of a kind view like my son just did last week.

Camping is extremely popular in this park. There are three areas that offer camping with multiple different campgrounds in each area. These all have their own opening and closing date as well as what is allowed in the park and what isn’t in terms of travel and sleep. Most campgrounds allow RV’s, so if that’s how you’re traveling, you’ll be in luck.

The Adirondack Park-New York
I’ve personally been here and let me tell you something-it’s absolutely beautiful. In fact I spent a lot of time here growing up and after all my travel it remains one of my very favorite places on Earth! It’s one of the largest national parks in the United States. It’s bigger than the Everglades, Glacier, Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone National parks combined. It has an area of 6 million acres and half of it has been constitutionally protected by the forest preserve to remain forever wild.

Inside of this massive area, you’ll find an enormous variety of campgrounds for your family to enjoy. These include RV parks, tents, and others. Since this is such a large area with tons of mountains, steep cliffs, lakes, and valleys, I suggest you invest in a good hybrid mattress in that RV if you use one. This way you can get the proper rest to ensure you enjoy the days ahead.

Glacier Bay National Park-Alaska
I’d love to go camping or at least travel to Alaska someday. This park features deep glacial fjords and high peaks, making it one of the most amazing places to view the scenery. Glacier Bay is a significant marine and terrestrial wilderness sanctuary, making the experience that much more amazing. It is also one of the largest protected Biosphere Reserves in the world.

If you decide that Glacier Bay may be the right spot for you, there are only a few campgrounds to choose from. Barlett Cove is one of their most popular walk-in campgrounds. If you go here, you’ll get a permit and bear-resistant food containers. You must also attend a 30-minute orientation so that you’re fully prepared for camping there and what their rules and regulations are.

Acadia National Park-Maine
Want to go camping in the winter? No problem! Acadia National Park features campgrounds that are open all year round with certain restrictions. This is one heck of an adventure if you plan to do it in the winter. In order to get to some of these campgrounds, such as the Blackwoods Campground, you have to hike there because the road is closed off to automobiles. Sites are also limited during this time of year (December-March). You’ll also only get water from a hand pump and you’ll get a portable toilet.

If you plan to camp during prime time, it’s suggested that you make a reservation at a lot of these campgrounds because of how popular the area is. Surrounding the area, you’ll find stunning lighthouses, beautiful nature, wildlife creatures, and great seafood.

Hot Springs National Park-Arkansas
Hot Springs National Park is also known as “The American Spa”. This park surrounds the north end of Hot Springs, Arkansas. In this area you’ll find thermal water. You can take a traditional bath at the Buckstaff Bathhouse or you can have a wonderful spa experience at the Quapaw Baths and Spa. You can also visit the hot springs where you can taste and feel the water.

Throughout the park, you’ll find geothermal areas. These areas are hot springs that you can enjoy. They can be found along the western side of Hot Springs Mountain in the downtown area of the city. There are also multiple campgrounds that you can enjoy if you’re passing through or plan a vacation there.

And there you have it! 5 of the most beautiful national parks to take your family camping. These parks are scattered all around the United States and there are even more than what is on this list. Camping is such a fun family experience and it gives you plenty of time to bond with each other while fishing, hiking, or just enjoying a nice walk. And don't forget to bring a saw with you for gathering and cutting firewood for that perfect campfire experience your family will never forget. You can pick one up here.

Two years ago when we started contemplating a move to the PNW we stumbled upon some photos of basically the cutest, most European Christmas village, imaginable without being in Europe. We image searched, checked average weather and discovered that it was a bit too cold to live in for us but we vowed to visit as soon as possible!

Fast forward to a few months ago, as Christmas approached and we were searching for a way to really get in the Christmas spirit and the quaint little village of Leavenworth once again came up, with all its stunning photos.  We quickly booked a hotel, which was no easy feat during town lighting days, and started to count down the days to our highly anticipated trip.

Now if you are coming from out of the country start by getting your ESTA and be sure to plan that early so everything is all set for visiting at Christmas time. If you are local like I am then it's just a simple drive through a mountain pass.  For us it happened to be quite snow covered so we knew this was going to be a cold and wonderful weekend. Leavenworth did not disappoint. We arrived in just enough time to get settled in to the hotel (all 5 of us plus our beautiful new puppy Koa) and bundle up for the tree and town lighting ceremony where they turn everything off in town and then all at the same time light the whole village in Christmas lights.  It is quite spectacular and worth dealing with the crowds in order to experience it first hand.

TIPS: I highly recommend booking your hotel far in advance as they fill up quickly during the tree lighting weekends.  I also suggest you stay someplace very close to the town center. Walking is the best way to get around all the little shops and staying too far away would make for a lot of chilly trekking just to reach the sled hill.

We had a short chilly walk to the town center where there were hordes of people waiting to see the town lighting.  They close off the street entirely to cars so you can enjoy without worries.  (They only do this during tree lighting weekends) We looked around the store fronts, grabbed some hot cocoa and chatted with all the people clamoring to pet our little puppy.  Then right on time the ceremony started.  Lots of beautiful singing, a cute little parade and then the LIGHTS!  It felt as if we were in a magical world.  In fact in that very moment we were.  The storefronts, the trees, even the sledding hill were all brightly and colorfully lit up.  We took about a million pictures, or so my kids say, and walked a bit further into town for dinner.

Next day we woke to even more snow.  Perfect for the horse drawn sleigh ride we were scheduled to do.  We drove over as it is a bit too far to walk from town.  There we were greeted by the staff and loaded onto the sleigh after greeting our drivers and horses.  The guides were very knowledgeable about the area and regaled us with one funny story after another.  They provide huge blankets to keep warm but I would still bundle up depending on the outside temp.  It was a beautiful 40 minute ride through some fields and along the river, with stunning mountain views the entire way. If you have a spare morning it is definitely something I would suggest for the entire family.  No dogs allowed though on this one.

There are loads of other things to do in and around town during the winter.  In  fact there are loads of things to do in the summer so we are already planning a trip back in the warm weather.  But I digress, in the winter you can take advantage of some great sledding hills, one that is directly in the center of town.  You can shop in town at some of the cutest little shops I've ever seen.  You can do snowmobiling tours, dog sled races, skiing, ice climbing, visit the nutcracker museum and more.  We only stayed 2 nights but you could easily spend a week or more getting into all sorts of winter activities.

Now no trip would be complete without some great food right?!  Well have no fear we found one of the most amazing spots to eat, in fact it was so good we ended up eating there twice.  Munchen Haus, located directly in the middle of town, has some of the yummiest cuisine we have had in quite a while. It is an outdoor eatery (don't worry they have loads of outdoor heaters so you are not too cold) with a great beer garden.  They even do holiday movie showings at night which we loved.  Nothing like watching elf in a small Christmas village!  They don't have a large menu but what they do have is amazing.  Sausages, hot dogs, pretzels, and a huge array of locally brewed beers.  We are originally from the New York area so it goes a long way in saying these pretzels were the best I have ever had.  Equally my boys and husband tell me that the sausages they had were also the best ever!  I could not say a single bad thing about this place so if you get to Leavenworth be sure to eat at least one meal at Munchen Haus, although I seriously doubt that you can eat there just once.

We found Leavenworth to be every bit as charming as we hoped.  The town is lovely, the shops endearing, the eateries downright delicious, and the whole town is every dog friendly which we always love.  If you find yourself in Washington state any time of the year head to Leavenworth.  If you are around in the winter, even better just be sure to book in advance!  It really is that good!

Have you been to Leavenworth, WA?  What did you think?  Will you go back?

When you travel around the world with your family you’ll find yourself using all kinds of transport. Sometimes it’s a hire car, sometimes a camper, often it’s bus or train travel. Occasionally it’s a trusty horse or camel and every so often some kind soul will even loan you their own car for you to zip around town in!

Having such variety makes every new transport experience an adventure. The photographs you take of the family riding camels around the pyramids of Egypt will document a transport adventure that is talked about for years to come. Especially if any member of the family is scared!

You’ll remember our post about the great camper we had in Australia. We found it a lot easier to drive than we ever expected and can’t wait to try one out again. We weren’t too sure we were going to be able to manage it but it turned out to be really basic even for those with no experience.

We also tried a jetboat to race around Sydney Harbour – not technically a form of transport but a high-speed adrenaline rush that resulted in lots of squealing! See, I told you the photos are priceless when any member of the family is mildly apprehensive and terrified!

We’ve enjoyed the bamboo railway in Cambodia and ferry rides in Thailand. As well as using a basic hire car to venture out on our ill-fated visa run from Malaysia.

Even in the US there are so many options for travel.  One does not need a car of their own.  In fact, I think there are many, many benefits to ditching the car and jumping on board a train or bus.  Imagine being able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery.  No GPS checks, no bathroom breaks needed, and with kids, there is no doubt in my mind that train travel with its ability to get up and walk around is the absolute best way to travel!

With the Internet and all it's various search capabilities, it is easier than ever to find great deals. If you want to search tickets from the east coast all the way to the west you can easily research, purchase tickets, and be on your way in no time!  You can search for bus or train travel anywhere in the country at the click of a button!  Man, I wish this was available when we did our massive road trip back in 2006.

What different ways have you traveled around the US or the world?  Tell us about it in the comments below!

For those who are unfamiliar with the concept of love lock spots, they are locations where a couple is able to lock a padlock to a bridge (in most instances, although there are other love lock spots) and throw away the key, as a symbol of their everlasting love. While some oppose it, it's still a very interesting custom and a great way to find out about romantic tourist spots.

Tips: I know some of these spots are definitely not budget destinations but you can save money in loads of unique ways.  You can start by trying to make use coupons like those you can find at spots like Discountrue where you can find tons of savings on airfare and hotels.  You can also try simple things such as buying your luggage when you see it on sale or packing a bit of food to offset the budget. These types of things seem small but trust me after traveling for 10 years with 5 people the little things really help!
Read on and learn more about the places where couples express their undying devotion to one another!

New York
Those who wish to start their love lock journey in the United States can head to the Big Apple and make their way to the Brooklyn Bridge, where love locks have become a prominent fixture for years. What's interesting, the Open Organization Of Lockpickers has banded against this practice and there have been performed love picking demonstrations, with the goal of carefully removing each lock and creating a public sculpture.

Moscow
While some city officials wish to put a stop to love locks, Moscow encourages the practice and has lined the Luzhkov bridge with metal trees, to make it easier for couples to attach locks without doing damage to the bridge. Since love locks are allowed here, Moscow is becoming an increasingly popular destination for newlywed couples that wish to express their love in a new and unique fashion!

Dublin
Dublin visitors that are looking for prime love lock locations have a wide range of places to choose from, including the Ha’penny bridge (where most of the love locks in Dublin are located), the Rosie Hackett bridge, Boardwalk balustrade and the Millennium bridge. At the present moment, Dublin city officials are devising new and improved methods for love lock placement, with an eye towards providing alternative spots.

Venice
Venice has developed into a common destination for couples in search of love lock locations and the three that are most commonly visited are the Ponte dell’Accademia, Ponte degli Scalzi and the Rialto bridge. Venice's city officials have launched a campaign against the placement of these locks, but love-struck couples refuse to be deterred, as the locks continue to come back over and over again, even when they have been removed.

Paris
What list of lovebird destinations would be complete without mentioning the most romantic city in the world? The city of love provides a number of locations to place your love lock, including Pont de l’ArchevĂȘchĂ© and the Pont des Arts. The locks have also spread to the majority of the bridges overlooking the Seine. While a campaign was recently started by the city that urged couples to take selfies instead of placing love locks on Parisian bridges, there is currently no end to love locks in sight.

As you can see many places where these love locks can be found are in the process of trying to stop the practice all together.  Better get a move on if placing a love lock is on your bucket list!

When it comes to America, it can be really hard to pinpoint exactly where to go, because of just how
extensive the country is, and just how many fantastic things there are to see and do there. No matter what state you visit, you’re certain to discover something exciting and fun to do, but to make your choice a little bit easier, we’ve put together a list of some of the best places to visit in America.

When you visit America, it is important to remember to fill out an ESTA application in order to gain access to the country, if you qualify as part of the visa waiver program. Alternatively, it is important to get a visa if you do not qualify for the waiver program, in order to have a hassle-free trip to enjoy some of these best places to visit in America.

New York
New York is a hugely iconic city in America, and a trip over to the country without a visit to the Big
Apple, would make your trip incomplete. Famous for featuring in a huge number of movies, having a
number of iconic sites such as the Empire State Building, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, this
five borough city is one of the best in the world. If fashion, art, culture and cuisine are all of interest
to you, then New York should be a definite tick on your list.

As amazing as New York city is don't let your adventure to New York end there.  New York is also home to some of the most beautiful mountains and lakes in the world.  In fact, after all of my travels the Adirondack mountains in upstate New York remain one of my very favorite places on Earth!

Las Vegas
Las Vegas is probably the biggest gambling destination in the world, and this buzzing city is known for its bright lights, 24 hour casinos and for being able to have a taster of sites around the world without even leaving the city. Las Vegas is as exciting during the day as it is at night, and the endless amount of entertainment options will leave you grinning from ear to ear. It can even be a great spot with kids! Aside from casinos, there’s plenty of landmarks that you can catch such as the famous Bellagio fountains, the roof-top roller coaster and many more. Of course, if you want to hit the casinos too, it’s all a part of the Vegas experience, that no-one should miss out on.

Again don't stop at the city center when exploring.  Just a few hours from Vegas you will find some amazing natural landscapes and modern wonders such as the Hoover Dam.  Vegas is a lot of fun but don't forget about the surrounding areas where there are loads of day trip opportunities. Even our next spot could be coupled with a Vegas trip.

Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is a jaw-dropping location, which is a must on the best places to visit in America list. It can overwhelm your senses through its immense size, and its steep-sided canyon was carved by the Colorado River. No description of pictures can take into account the sheer size of the Grand Canyon, and aside from the sightseeing aspects, there’s plenty that you can do while you’re there.

You can jump on a tour, go white-water rafting in the river and even take part in a helicopter ride
over the canyon to really experience it.  But if you are short on time or money, driving the rim and doing some simple lookouts and trails around the top can be just as rewarding and most certainly just as breathtaking.

San Francisco
California is a fantastic state, and in particular the artsy city of San Francisco is worth a visit. It is well known for its hilly landscape, year-round fog and Golden Gate Bridge alongside the cable cars and colorful Victorian houses. You can visit Alcatraz Island, the notorious former prison and take
pictures with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. There’s so much to experience in San Francisco, and the artsy culture and fantastic food is just the tip of the iceberg.

Obviously there are many more amazing spots in the US to visit.  Really one could spend 2 years touring around and not see all the amazing things in the country.  Hawaii is always at the top of my list but since I write so much about that already I thought a change of pace for this article would be best!

What do you think of this list?  What would you add?  Where is your favorite spot in America to visit?  Tell us about it in the comments below.

If you are the kind of person who likes to live on the edge and you have plans to go traveling in America there are some great options for thrilling seeking cities to visit on your travels. As you are planning to travel to America you will need to fill out an ESTA that enables you to travel throughout the U.S you will also be pleased that an ESTA lasts for a period of two years. This gives you amble opportunity to explore a variety of different states and cities.

So what are you waiting for??  Head out to visit some of these adrenaline filled cities soon!  Here are our top pics for most thrill seeking places to visit whilst in America.

Hawaii

Each corner of Hawaii has something to offer thrill seekers. Maui is the perfect place for families to
enjoy beaches and have fun as well as drive the insanely windy Hana Road. Oahu attracts surfers of all levels and visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor adventures including scuba diving. In Oahu you can even climb inside a shark cage for an up-close experience with the ocean’s most feared creatures, sharks. The cage stays at the water’s surface, allowing those with no scuba experience to enjoy it too. The big island boasts everything from black-sand beaches to snow-covered peaks, from hardened lava deserts to steamy and lush rainforests.  For thrills you can quad through the jungle, hike out to active lava flows and zip lining high above waterfalls.

Miami, FL

As well as the many pool parties, stunning beaches, and great Cuban cuisine there are loads of thrills that can be had in Miami. As there are many lovely beaches, visitors will be able to experience kayaking, paddle boarding and scuba diving as well as fishing, sailing and jet skiing. Miami is the place to try a wide amount of different water sports. If you still searching for thrills you can even experience zombie runs, something we are dying to try!

Orange County, CA

Although many may think Orange County is incredibly quaint with high socialites. It is actually filled
with fun things to do like surfing, bike trailing and hiking. It is not a cheap destination typically but as always there are some great ways to save money.  Spending a lot of time at one of the large beaches is one such way.  Most locals are also big on deep sea fishing and large scale scavenger hunts, both exciting and fun ways to see the area.

Phoenix, AZ
If you want some blistering sunshine then head to Phoenix which is basically a giant sand box with
golf courses. It’s ranked highest in mud runs and obstacles courses so if you are looking for adventure then there is many to be had in Arizona. The valley of the Sun was also up there for 5ks, as apparently running over three miles in strong heat is difficult. Not my cup of tea but many enjoy that.  I'd like to wait until winter to run if visiting such a warm place.

Washington, DC

Although you can mostly find politics as well as many historical buildings in Washington, there is
much more to it. For starters it is a lovely family location. But for travelers looking for thrills it also ticks off a lot of boxes. You can enjoy kayaking and tubing at Marther Gorge and on the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, as well as fun foams runs.

Denver, CO

The Mile High City has sunshine most days of the year which means it is the perfect climate to seek
out some thrills. If you happen to be travelling to Denver then you are in luck, with so many mountains there are plenty of perfect opportunities to go rock climbing and zip-lining.

What is the most thrill seeking state you have visited?  Why?  Tell us about it in the comments below!

Pennsylvania offers some of the most historic sites in US history, with Philadelphia and the Mason-Dixon line and Amish country all within a day's drive of each other. Many visitors expecting to make an extended stay end up enjoying the state from the Spring to the Fall seasons, when the weather allows for golf and other outdoor activities.

Here are some considerations to make when you plan for an extended vacation in Pennsylvania:

Know the rules of the road
For the most part, Pennsylvania does not have too many rules that are different than other states. You will need to drive more slowly through towns and you will need to be cognizant of the rights of farm
vehicles in some locations- yet for the most part, the rules are the same as other places.

If you plan to stay in Pennsylvania for an extended amount of time and have a car, however, you will likely need to take it in for a Pennsylvania State Inspection. State inspections are designed to help find out if there is anything wrong with your car that may impact you from a safety standpoint. You can take your car in to a variety of places to have them look at it for a very low cost. Dealers that focus on providing all kinds of service in-house are one of the more popular places to take your car.

If the place that you take it to finds something wrong with it, you will need to arrange to make repairs.

Don't miss out on history

Although movies like National Treasure are few and far between, there actually is some truth the to fact that our ancestors embedded information in the writing that they left behind. In fact, many of the
founding fathers used methods to add extra information. When you go online to view this, if you are an expert reader, you will find that contemporary researchers have made facsimiles that effectively destroy that extra information that is now only contained in the original.

The good news for you is that if you want to learn some secrets from the past, going to view the originals that are put into the public domain at libraries and museums all over Pennsylvania will provide you with a treasure trove of information that can enhance your understanding of history. In Spain alone, one researcher estimated that some authors added almost 30 to 40 percent more information to their texts that was never understood or published again.

Overall, Pennsylvania is one of the most charming states that you could visit for an extended amount of time. By planning ahead, you will certainly be able to enjoy the time that you do spend there more.

After my last posts on our time in Kauai I know you are itching to head over and explore this amazing island.  I told you already what you must do while visiting, where the most beautiful spot on the planet is located, and where you can find some great food in Kauai so now I need to fill you in on where to lay your head next time you head to Kauai.

If you choose to stay in or near Hanalei, and you ABSOLUTELY should, then there is no better choice than the Hanalei Colony Resort.

For starters, Hanalei as a town and area of the island is an extremely special place.  The ocean is beautiful, it is the gateway to the Na Pali coast, and the town itself is adorably quaint.  But the aspect that really blew our minds was the gorgeous mountain views that backed right up to the town and the resort itself.

The resort is roughly 10 minutes from Hanalei town, through a lovely, albeit narrow, winding, cliff hugging road, and 10 minutes from the famous tunnels beach and start of the Kalalau trail.  The location really cannot be beat, stunning is an understatement!

We arrived after a stunning drive over and discovered we would be staying in one of the beautiful ocean view rooms.  There are many different room types but most have at least a partial ocean view.

The rooms themselves are lovely.  More like mini apartments with loads of room to fit even my crew of boys.  There is a well appointed kitchen and the 2 bedrooms are sort of convertible.  They can be all closed up for privacy or opened up so that the feel of the whole space is that much bigger.  I really liked that.

The beds were comfortable although some were more so than others and the living room had beautiful wooden tables, reading material and comfy couches and chairs.  If staying long term there was also plenty of closet space for storing things.  The bathroom was also newly renovated and it had one of the nicest showers I have yet to encounter!

The property is spread out and located directly on the beach with gorgeous mountains behind.  There is an amazing restaurant, the Mediterranean Gourmet, and a spa for those that desire even more relaxation.  The pool is small, nothing super special but a pool none the less.  The nice thing was how many beach and pool toys were available for anyone to use.  I also noticed a BBQ area and laundry facilities.  I didn't have a chance to use either but they are available, a nice option to have especially if staying longer than we did.

The thing that really helps the Hanalei Colony stand out is it's unplugged status.  There is wifi but no TVs, telephones, or AC.  You can sleep to the waves crashing (fans are available for hot nights but being right on the ocean we found the trade winds to be sufficient) and focus on each other rather than the lull of the TV.  It may not be for everyone but with so much natural beauty around you really there is no need for any other entertainment.  They offer games and puzzles in the office and are very attentive to any concerns you have.

We had a great 2 nights at the HCR. If you get a chance to visit the North shore of Kauai I would not hesitate to recommend this laid back beach resort.

Thank you to the Hanalei Colony Resort for the lovely 2 night stay.  As always my thoughts are my own!
