Shark's Cove, Hawaii Scuba Diving

As soon as Dylan and I were scuba certified my mind started racing about all the great things we would be experiencing in the underwater world, around the world. Our next stop after a brief stint in Australia was Hawaii and we knew one of the best things about Hawaii was its incredible sea life.

After getting settled here on Oahu, and going snorkeling with sharks, we felt ready to tackle the deeper waters offshore. I contacted Gabe at Kaimana Divers and decided it would be a good fit for Dylan and I for our first dives. Gabe was super friendly and understanding about my nerves, yeah I still have them.

We settled on a shore dive off the North shore in an area named Shark's Cove, known for it clear waters and fish diversity. Most people think that North shore is synonymous with huge waves but the truth is that during the summer the water on the North shore is the calmest on the island.  We knew of all the dives on Oahu we wanted to do North Shore dives now before the waves change.

We arrived at 830 to meet with Denise and Lindsey. They were already there setting everything up and greeted us as if we were already friends. We chatted a while and as a few more people rolled in they briefed us on the dive. There were about 8 divers and 3 dive masters so a really nice ratio especially for someone nervous or new to diving.

The dive itself was wonderful. I would guess 60-70 feet visibility and a nice comfortable temperature, with a wet suit anyway.  We had a somewhat cloudy day so the colors could have been nicer but it was still amazingly clear.

We did 2 dives with only a short break in the middle.  On the first dive we went to the left side.  It offered great fish, beautiful rocks, and a nice calm intro.  It took me a few minutes to really get comfortable and the girls were great hanging with me and helping me get my weights right so I could enjoy better buoyancy control.  We were able to see moray eels as well as many beautiful fish only found in these waters.

Our second dive was the same entry but once under water we went to the right.  This side was a bit more adventurous and definitely Dylan's favorite side.  We saw more eels, more beautiful fish, a puffer fish, cleaner shrimp, and nudibranches.  The best part of the right side though was all the swim through areas, small cave like tunnels that gave a mirrored sheen to the roof.  It was gorgeous. We may have only been 40 feet down but it felt like being on another planet.

I do not think we could have had a better experience than we had with Kaimana Divers!  They offer North shore, West shore, and South shore dives as well as exclusive night diving.  If you are interested in night diving be sure to go to www.oahunightdiving.com for all the details.  Whether you are new to diving or experienced you won't be disappointed in Hawaii with Kaimana Divers.

  1. I find diving to be the most calming and relaxing thing to do on this plant, that is once I am under the water. I don't like the bobbing up and down on the boat stuff. I love diving in Hawaii, gorgeous. Not sure if you are on the Big Island, but if so there are some great lava tubes and nurse sharks near Kona.

    1. Oh great to know. We are headed to the Big Island soon. We are also looking to do the night manta ray dive there, if I can get past the fear of it all. And I agree I hate the bobbing in the water, gets me motion sick but deep under no issues at all:)
