Crete The Best Place To Combine A Beach Holiday With A History Lesson

Anyone want to visit Crete with us?

A quick Google search will show you that we’ve all been missing out! Amazing blue waters, historical museums, ruins and plenty of areas where you can hike combine to make Crete look like a great place to pay a visit.

Imagine swimming in crystal clear waters one day and exploring ancient ruins the next? On Crete this is extremely doable!

We’ve all seen those classic photographs of Mediterranean waters that you want to dive straight into. In places like Crete it is almost impossible to take a bad picture. This can be a big plus for some people. Going home with holiday snaps that look almost professional can be an exciting thing for those who struggle to capture the beauty of a place. I know it is one of the things I most enjoy on holidays.  Crete could become the highlight of your photo collection in no time!

Knossos houses the biggest draw card on Crete, with the Minoan Palace being well worth an extended visit. There is a long history of this palace being destroyed by natural events and it is quite extraordinary to visit and see how much of it has survived. You could spend hours wandering through the remains and looking at the layout which in many instances reveals what must have been a maze of rooms. Parts of the Palace have been restored which allows a good idea of the colour and vibrancy that must have been part of this area in the past.

You’ll be amazed at the sheer size of this site. Arthur Evans excavated this area in the early 20th Century and was himself surprised at how far off his original expectations were. For those interested in language and scripts, you might be excited to know that Linear A and Linear B (ancient scripts) were both discovered on this site.

When you’ve had your fill of the historical sites you can soak up the beauty of nature on Crete with very little break in your routine. Rock climbing is available for the more adventurous as well as jeep tours through the mountainous areas and the forest. Once you are up high you will have even more opportunities for those breathtaking photographs of the coastline.

If you are on Crete purely to relax then days spent in the sun are easily accommodated by the many beaches available. If retail therapy is high on your list there are plenty of Greek shops and cafes to keep your attention. You might even see the men of Crete dressed in their traditional costume. Make sure you take a couple of great pictures of them. Traditional dress is something that we see less and less as the world seems to become more and more integrated.

There are an amazing number of accommodation options on Crete as I discovered. Villa Plus offers some of the best out there. Almost all of them have a pool which is an enormous benefit for a family traveling with children. The other benefit is they are really large and there is a multitude to choose from. Often when we choose accommodation there isn’t a great variety, we are limited to 2-3 choices and resign ourselves to being on top of one another! On Crete it seems we would have our pick of some of the most luxurious villas around and they come complete with air conditioning and sometimes with wifi. What more could we want?

It seems that a car would be needed to get around to some of these places which always increases the costs of a visit but the beauty of Crete seems worth the added expense. I can’t think of a single place I’d want to miss when visiting – I want to do it all!
