Hangout Hotel, Singapore

When planning a trip to Singapore one of the first things you will notice is that the prices for just about everything are very high. Not high compared to the US or Australia but compared to the rest of Asia, Singapore carries quite a bit of sticker shock.

Rooftop garden
After exhaustive research, I contacted the lovely people at Hangout Hotel, Mt Emily. From the photos online it seemed to be a great budget hotel option. Hostels typically have bunk beds which is great for some people, but with 2 family members over 6 feet tall we try and avoid that at all costs. Hangout Hotel was the ONLY reasonably priced facility I could find that met our criteria of clean, WIFI, and NO bunk beds.

When we arrived at the hotel, a short 20 mins from Chiangi airport, we immediately knew it was a great choice.

Rooms
The hotel offers several room types, shared and private, ensuite bathrooms and without. It is a no frills hotel so the rooms do not come with TV but there is so much to do in Singapore I am not sure when you would have time for TV anyway! There is also NO room service, mini bar, or hair dryer.

The quint room, 5 single beds.
What is included is fast WIFI in every room, basic toiletries like soap and shampoo, bottles of water upon check in, cold AC, and complimentary breakfast. We found the room to be spacious, bright, and most importantly very clean! The AC worked well and was a welcome relief from the Singapore heat. The breakfast changed daily and covered a large variety of foods, although it ends at 9am a bit early for late risers like us.

The shower was hot and had great pressure, both things I look for in a good bathroom. It was also very clean and came with a sufficient amount of towels for all 5 of us. I also liked that there was a nice area to hang clothes and put them away in an organized manner. Not a vital thing but certainly easier then digging through a suitcase. The one complaint I have about the room is the beds. They are clean and come with nice pillows and bedding but they are quite firm and for me that spelled a back ache each morning.  But of course some people prefer a firm bed.

Other than the bed firmness the room was spectacular. Nothing fancy but everything you need, and we even had a lovely view of the neighboring park.

Facilities
The facilities on offer at Hangout Hotel were even better than the room itself. On the first floor you can find the reception and the restaurant. Here they serve breakfast from 7am-930am and then a well known area restaurant takes over for lunch and dinner. We did not eat any meals at the hotel aside from breakfast due to the fact that we were out each day and evening. The menu is expansive and reasonably priced for the type of fare that it is.

On the 2nd floor you will find the “veg out zone”. Here there are sitting areas, several computers on hand free of use, complimentary coffee all day and night, a microwave for use, a sitting area outdoors for smoking, a pool table ($2 SD for each use), and a large flat screen TV which plays movies several times a day complete with a bean bag sitting area.  This is also the area where you will find vending machines for both sodas ad snacks.

Rooftop lounge

As if this was not enough already, there is also a “wash out” room with washing machines and dryers for use ($5 SD each) as well as a large garden/sitting/smoking area up on the roof. There is even a small and shallow splash pool for cooling off your feet.  And if you need to make any local phone calls there are phones available free of charge on every other floor.

Location
Location of a hotel is always very important and one of the hardest things to try and determine when coming to a new country or city. Knowing we only had 3 days in Singapore I was silently nervous about the location as I did not want to waste any time traveling from spot to spot.

As it turns out Hangout hotel could not have been in a better spot for our family.

Park view from our room

The hotel is located on a dead end street so there is very little traffic, yet the staff can call a taxi and it will be there within a couple minutes.  Across the street is a lovely park complete with a playground and shaded areas.

Also just across the street is a lovely walking path that leads down to Little India, a wonderful spot to explore and have a great meal.  You can get there in about 10 minutes and it is also where the closest MRT (subway) station is located.  Like I said the location is perfect!  With no traffic it took about 20 mins to get to Sentosa Island, the premium entertainment spot for entertainment in Singapore.

Walking path down to the Little India area
A huge thank you goes out to Hangout Hotel for our discounted rate and amazing time. The staff and all facilities were an excellent choice for a family and we will not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. We will be staying again next time we visit Singapore.

As always all opinions are our own and in no way swayed by the discounted price!

Be sure to follow Hangout hotel on Facebook and Twitter to catch all their great deals!
