The Mekong River is one of the true gems of Southeast Asia. It runs through some of my favorite countries in the region; Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Starting in the Tibetan Plateau, the river snakes it's way down through Burma and China on it's way to South East Asia. It has a fascinating array of tidal changes that are effected seasonally, making navigation difficult at times. It is also a very important trade route between China and Southeast Asia.
There are countless ways to enjoy the beauty of the Mekong River, from lazing the evening away by the shores in Vientiane, Laos to visiting remote villages along its shores in Cambodia. Swimming is possible in some areas but remember, even if the river looks narrow in spots, the current is quite a bit stronger then it may appear!
One unique way to enjoy the river, especially if you want the most bang for a short time frame, is to book a cruise. The Luxury Cruise Company is one place to set up an unforgettable cruise down the Mekong River. You can choose from several different types of cabins, boats, routes, and price ranges.
This option allows you to really soak in the history and beauty of the Mekong while at the same time offering time to explore multiple countries by land. Now these are not enormous cruise liners like you see off in the Caribbean, but rather smaller more personalized ships capable of giving you an experience that suits the needs of everyone in the family and is not as hard on the environment.
While on board you will find wonderful food, delightful staff, and tour guides able to answer your questions and guide you as to what activities would suit you best. Depending on the chosen route you will be able to enjoy many land visits where you can explore things like Angkor Wat, Ho Chi Minh City and so much more.
You will also be able to explore options such as diving, snorkeling, swimming, hiking mountains, floating markets, local fisheries, and all the things you would be able to enjoy by taking a traditional trip to the areas you visit.
The biggest benefit to a luxury boat tour is that you have a relaxing setting and can cover far more ground then you would be able to by traveling overland. So if you are short on time yet want to discover the Mekong Delta up close, a cruise just may be your best bet.
