4 Holiday Destinations to Visit in Cuba

Varadero Cuba

As the largest of all the Caribbean islands and boasting a location just 90 miles south of Florida, it should come as no surprise that Cuba is gaining popularity as a tourism destination. With an area of more than 100,000 square kilometers, it is important that visitors to the island have a clear idea of where they would like to go. If you are planning a holiday to Cuba, be sure to visit as many of these incredible destinations as possible.

1. Havana: This capital city is easily the most famous destination in Cuba, and it is also the most popular for tourists. The city boasts some fascinating colonial architecture, museums and cultural sights. Some of the most best places to visit include the old town of La Habana Vieja, a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site, the Catedral de San Cristobal, the Plaza de Armas or the Castillo de la Real Fuerza. Many tourists also enjoy visiting and taking tours in the Partagas Cigar Factory and the Havana Club Rum Factory to try some of Cuba's better known exports.

2. Baracoa: If the bustle of Havana leaves you needing a break from the crowds, then head to the charming coastal town of Baracoa. This town was the original capital of Cuba, and it was settled by Diego Velazquez in 1511. This destination is the ultimate place to relax on the beach with a drink, take in the local Cuban culture or try outdoor recreation activities like kayaking in the Yumuri River and hiking through the El Yunque National Park.

3. Trinidad: Those travellers interested in seeing some of the older colonial architecture should go out of their way to visit the city of Trinidad. Due to its abundance of colonial buildings within the city centre itself, Trinidad is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the buildings are filled with traditional Cuban furniture and have been restored to original conditions from the early 20th century. Walk the cobblestone streets until you arrive at the Archeological Museum, the Museum of the War Against the Bandits or the beautiful city cathedral. Just outside of Trinidad are the waterfalls of Topes de Collantes, which offer a chance to take breathtaking photographs or even swim at the base of the falls.

4. Varadero: If you are looking for upscale hotels, resorts, international dining and a chance to relax on some truly stunning beaches, then Varadero is the perfect place to visit on your Cuban holiday. Along with white sandy shorelines and luxury hotels, make sure that you see the Bellamar Caves, the Villa Du Pont, the amusement park and zoo combination called Parque Josone or even the exciting dolphin show called Delfinario, an option popular with both adults and children of all ages.
