A trip to Cuba isn’t high on everyone’s list of top places to visit. Which is a shame because there are some serious Cuba holiday deals going at just about any time of the year that you care to take a look!

If you have considered Cuba for a visit however, you need to know that there are some quirky little pieces of information you should be aware of before you land on those sunny shores. This goes for all nationalities, not just those from the US.

So here are our top tips for planning your trip to Cuba:
  • If you’re from the US, you need to go on a tour with an operator who holds a Person-to-Person permit. To comply with this permit your tour operator will have a set itinerary that you must participate in. You need to keep proof of participation and a record of the places visited.
  • It is generally understood that US dollars and any credit cards issued by US banks are not accepted in Cuba. There’ll be no relying on your secret stash of US dollars to get you out of a pinch if your credit card doesn’t work. In actual fact you can convert US dollars but you’ll end up losing about 30% on the transaction. For best value you need to take some other type of currency – Pounds Sterling are a good choice.
  • Always make sure the currency you take to Cuba is in good condition or it could be rejected when you try to exchange it. Your Cuban holiday deal could be less than fun if you can’t exchange your cash!
  • There are two currencies in Cuba. Cuban Convertible Pesos and the Cuban Peso. Tourists will mostly use the first one while locals generally use Cuban Pesos.
  • You cannot convert currency outside of Cuba to the local currency. You’ll need to do so at the airport on arrival or when you get to your hotel. Generally once you convert your currency to Cuban pesos you cannot convert it back without paying large fees so make sure you only convert as much as you need unless you’d like some currency to take home as a
  • Visas are required to enter Cuba. You can organize these ahead of time by checking with the consulate to find out what kind of Visa you need. Children require a Visa as well and these are not free.
  • Currently travelers are required to show their proof of travel insurance on arrival in Cuba. If your insurance is not comprehensive enough you will be required to purchase extra insurance so make sure yours meets the guidelines before you pay for it. Consider getting confirmation in writing that you are covered in Cuba – especially if your insurance company is US based.
  • Each person needs to pay an exit tax when leaving Cuba. Make sure you have enough cash notes in the local currency to pay this levy. Coins are not accepted.
As you can see there is a lot to think about before you set off on your Cuban holiday. More preparation and planning than usual will be required to make sure you have an enjoyable time while in Cuba. The effort should be well worth it for the experience you are about to have!

Varadero Cuba

As the largest of all the Caribbean islands and boasting a location just 90 miles south of Florida, it should come as no surprise that Cuba is gaining popularity as a tourism destination. With an area of more than 100,000 square kilometers, it is important that visitors to the island have a clear idea of where they would like to go. If you are planning a holiday to Cuba, be sure to visit as many of these incredible destinations as possible.

1. Havana: This capital city is easily the most famous destination in Cuba, and it is also the most popular for tourists. The city boasts some fascinating colonial architecture, museums and cultural sights. Some of the most best places to visit include the old town of La Habana Vieja, a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site, the Catedral de San Cristobal, the Plaza de Armas or the Castillo de la Real Fuerza. Many tourists also enjoy visiting and taking tours in the Partagas Cigar Factory and the Havana Club Rum Factory to try some of Cuba's better known exports.

2. Baracoa: If the bustle of Havana leaves you needing a break from the crowds, then head to the charming coastal town of Baracoa. This town was the original capital of Cuba, and it was settled by Diego Velazquez in 1511. This destination is the ultimate place to relax on the beach with a drink, take in the local Cuban culture or try outdoor recreation activities like kayaking in the Yumuri River and hiking through the El Yunque National Park.

3. Trinidad: Those travellers interested in seeing some of the older colonial architecture should go out of their way to visit the city of Trinidad. Due to its abundance of colonial buildings within the city centre itself, Trinidad is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the buildings are filled with traditional Cuban furniture and have been restored to original conditions from the early 20th century. Walk the cobblestone streets until you arrive at the Archeological Museum, the Museum of the War Against the Bandits or the beautiful city cathedral. Just outside of Trinidad are the waterfalls of Topes de Collantes, which offer a chance to take breathtaking photographs or even swim at the base of the falls.

4. Varadero: If you are looking for upscale hotels, resorts, international dining and a chance to relax on some truly stunning beaches, then Varadero is the perfect place to visit on your Cuban holiday. Along with white sandy shorelines and luxury hotels, make sure that you see the Bellamar Caves, the Villa Du Pont, the amusement park and zoo combination called Parque Josone or even the exciting dolphin show called Delfinario, an option popular with both adults and children of all ages.
