Great Residence Inn -- Bangkok, Thailand Airport Hotel: Review

When landing in Bangkok, Thailand after a transcontinental flight, the last thing you want to do is to get in a car and drive 45 mins-1 hour.  Knowing that we would be arriving at 2:30 in the morning with lots of luggage and 3 sleepy kids (as well as 2 tired parents) we decided that a hotel closer to the airport was the way to go.

After some Internet research, we decided on the Great Residence Inn.  It was only 5 mins from the airport, had a restaurant and swimming pool, and was right on a canal.  The cost, only $40 per night, included breakfast for all 5 of us and airport transfer.  I was sold!  But did it live up to the hype.....

PROS
  • Wonderfully easy airport transfer, they were waiting there eager to please at 2:30am
  • Indeed just a 5 min. drive to the hotel from the airport
  • Swimming pool, although full of chlorine, a great option for cooling off and keeping kids busy
  • Onsite restaurant (there is a con to this as well so check below)
  • Pleasant and helpful staff
  • Ensuite shower, hot and cold. (It is a great shower but it is in the bathroom with no room to spare, something quite common in Thailand, so the entire bathroom gets wet, not a big deal but worth noting.  Could be a pro or a con!)
  • Maid service (the entire hotel was constantly being cleaned, the floors were sparkling)
  • Sat. TV but not many English channels
  • Refrigerator with complimentary water (remember NO drinking the tap water in Thailand)
  • A/C with remote
  • On a canal with fish jumping
  • Walking distance to 7-11 for any extras you may need
  • Massage available on site for a great price (starting at $8 for neck and shoulders)
  • Free WIFI in room
  • Taxi service available on site
CONS
  • Pool had lots of chlorine, stinging to the eyes and slimy to the touch (poolside shower was useful and towels were abundant)
  • Restaurant only had a few things from its menu and the service in the morning for breakfast was not very fast or efficient (very slow to get our second cup of coffee to temporarily ease our jet lag ;)
All in all, the Great Residence Inn was a great a great option for a relaxing, easy to get to hotel.  Great for families, with rooms large enough to accommodate up to 5 people.   Check it out on your next trip to Bangkok, Thailand.
