Sofia

Paying a visit to Bulgaria’s capital city will give you an opportunity to visit some important historical and cultural landmarks. The National Archaeological Museum houses artifacts dating back to 1,600,000 BC, while the National Palace of Culture and National Art Gallery will give you further insight into the city’s historical and cultural past. Once you’re done with the history lesson, head for Mount Vitosha for some stunning city views and/or some hiking and skiing.

Rila National Park

If you’re an outdoors enthusiast, a visit to Rila National Park is a must. Located in the Rila mountain chain about 100 km south of Sofia, the park boasts some of the most stunning glacial lakes, long rivers, forests, and peaks in all of eastern Europe. You can spend the day hiking up to Peak Maljovica, exploring the archaeological sites at Germanea, Spasovitsa, and Pomochena Polyana, or relaxing in the mineral hot springs of Sapareva Banya.

Belogradchik

Located just east of the Serbian border in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, this small town is certainly a spot the entire family can enjoy. It boasts two main points of interests for travellers: the first is the Belogradchik Rocks, a group of sandstone rocks with prominent, interesting formations and ancient legends attached to them. The second major attraction is the Belogradchik Fortress, which was originally constructed in the time when the region formed part of the Roman Empire.

Sunny Beach

Sunny Beach is the largest and most popular seaside resort in Bulgaria, located along the sandy shores of the Black Sea Coast. Aside from relaxing on the beach, visitors can head to one of the area’s two aqua parks, Action Aqua Park and Aqua Paradise, or go horse riding or go-karting on the northern part of the beach. From Sunny Beach, it’s possible to make a quick day trip to Nessebar, an ancient Thracian village founded in the 2^nd-century B.C. that has some of the most beautiful historic buildings in the country.

The Wonderful Bridges

These natural marble arches are located deep within the Rodope Mountains some 80 km south of Plovdiv and 35 km northwest of Chepelare. Their unique shape is the result of a cave collapsing in the Erkyupriya River thousands of years ago after an earthquake rocked the region. Today, it is possible for tourists to pass under the larger of the two bridges, while the second can only be seen and appreciated at a distance.
