10 things to remember when sending your child to a language school

If you are considering sending your child to a language school abroad, it might be a daunting prospect. It can feel scary to be so far away from your child, believe me I can relate to those feelings. However there are plenty of good reasons to go for it. Here are 10 pointers to consider.

Safety first
Every overseas educational program will make your child’s safety of paramount importance. By researching the health and security measures of each school or college, you can put your mind at rest that your child will be safe during their time overseas.

Is your child ready?
Studying abroad is a big responsibility – is your child up to the challenge? Assessing their maturity will help you to feel confident that you have chosen the right path for your child.  Some children are ready at 12 while others not until 16 or even older, know your child and be honest about their ability to be on their own to some degree.

Stay in touch
There are plenty of ways to stay in touch with your child while they are studying abroad, including social media, email and free online calling programs such as Skype. It's a good idea to agree on a contact plan with your child before they leave for their studies.

The experience of a lifetime

Completing an overseas educational program is a great chance to visit new places, learn new skills and meet new people. It will be difficult for your child to have this chance later on in life, so why not let them take the plunge now? When they are older, they will be able to look back and feel proud of their achievements as a result of this amazing experience.  The intangible benefits that go along with the actual education of the school are immeasurable.

Standing out from the crowd
When it comes to gaining future employment, studying overseas will give your child the edge in a competitive market. There’s nothing which can beat studying abroad in terms of skills and experience for a job application.  Gaining the skill of a second or perhaps third language can be the thing that makes you stand out in the future.

Learning something new
Your child will gain skills from their studies that they won’t be able to get at home. Learning a new language, communicating with people from different cultures and gaining a deeper appreciation of their own culture are just a few of the things they will learn by studying abroad.

Support with planning
Applying to study overseas can be a big challenge in terms of preparation. However schools can assist with some of the arrangements as they supply you with a visa support letter which can help with the application process.  Most schools also have checklists that you can refer to when preparing.  They handle this for a living so take advantage of their expertise when planning even the small details.

Academic achievement
As well as academic credits, a qualification gained abroad will help your child’s college or university application to stand out. They will also be better equipped to excel at their studies when they return home.  Perspective and focus can be some of the added benefits!

An opportunity to grow
Studying abroad will teach your child to be self-sufficient and responsible for themselves. By being out of their comfort zone, they will gain an increased sense of confidence and learn to cope with difficult situations.

Making new friends
Imagine your child being able to make a whole new set of friends from around the world. International colleges can bring together students from all walks of life.

What do you think, would you send your child to a language school?  Have you already?  What skills did they come home with?
